Hi Megan- The color shouldn’t matter to much. Do you know if it is Oil or
    Latex? Happy 4th! Russ

Hey Russ! I’m actually in the process of buying a different home instead
(oct 9th closing!!) and I have a question for you. When staining a deck a
dark color, is there any type of protection I should use on it to prevent
it from lightening over time? Or is that something you just deal with a
re-stain from time to time? – Obviously clueless

Hi Megan- That is something you just deal with by re-staining time to time.
The UV rays will lighten the color over time. Good luck on October 9th!

My house has latex stain on cedar shingles (siding). I was told (by
Benjamin Moore) to use a garden hose and not powerwash or it could damage
the wood itself. They also recommend the 2 products you demonstrate.
Amazing that people had told me that stain doesn’t peel or crack and only
paint does; now I know better:)

Russ, I’ve been staining decks for 18 years now and after watching your
videos it’s like looking in the mirror. You do decks exactly like I do.
You have obviously been through all the trial and errors and had the
ingenuity to find the best way. Everyone reading this, Follow this guy if
you plan on DIY, this is done exactly as it should be done. I have yet to
see another video on youtube where a deck company is restoring a deck
correctly. Well done and keep up the great work!

I did have a question for you. I currently use TWP wood stain semi
transparent, it usually has a life span of two seasons ( can withstand two
winters) Could you tell me your thoughts on the Benjamin Moore product and
it’s durability? I did like your finished product and may want to use it.

Russ, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate the help that your great
series of videos has been to me. I did a bunch of research on refinishing
decks before I started, and it can get overwhelming with all of the
different opinions. I had help yesterday, but was kind of left alone
mid-project and so was more than a little freaked out. Watching these
videos and having you explain things in your calm, friendly way has kind of
been like being talked down off a ledge!!!

I can appreciate the time you spent explaining and it was very informative.
I would have liked for the video to be longer and show you completing the
job, unless that is on another video. To the person that called him an
imbecile, if you do not have anything nice to say do not say anything at
    all.

great video. i’m removing paint from my deck to re-stain it with a more
clear stain. I have it off the top surface but it’s tough getting the paint
    between the boards. Any advice?

Russ, love your videos. super helpful in my year-long re-painting of our
    newly purchased home!!!
So now to tackle our deck, appears to be solid-stained, not sure if it’s
oil or latex… the winters are rough here in NE ohio and deck showing
wear, prob 1.5/2 yrs since it’s been cleaned/restained. thinking of trying
this shown here in your video. few questions. 1) how should you apply this
BM stripper on a small deck not using a pressure washer? 2) what did you do
with the spindles/under areas? 3) can you apply arborcoat directly over
another brand’s stain, if so what prep is necessary? thanks!!! -megan
